Palladium Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard Certified™ Software
The Palladium Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard Certified Software program is designed to identify Balanced Scorecard applications that meet the standards set forth by Palladium to support the Palladium Execution Premium Process™ (XPP), which is based on the strategy management system developed by Drs. Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton.
The certified software program provides guidance to organizations evaluating software applications and is a resource for identifying applications that exceed the minimum standards outlined by Palladium and, therefore, can be used as the foundation for a strategic management system based on the Palladium XPP. The program also defines development guidelines for software providers who wish to support the Palladium XPP.
Benefits of Certification
The benefits of becoming Palladium Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard Software Certified include:
- Promotion to customers that a specific Balanced Scorecard application has been certified by the creators of the Balanced Scorecard.
- The promotion of certified applications on the Palladium website.
- The ability to take advantage of Palladium joint marketing opportunities, including development support, training, consulting, communities, and publications.
- The right to include the Palladium Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard Software Certified logo on marketing materials to differentiate a certified application from the sea of those that are not certified.
Process and Standards
The certification process consists of an interview and product demonstrations with the application provider and a formal evaluation by Palladium that includes assessment and recommendations.
Certification is based on a clear set of standards, updated annually, that are designed to ensure the integrity of software applications that claim to be based on the Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and the strategy management system of which it is a part.

Background
Drs. Kaplan and Norton are the creators of the Balanced Scorecard, strategy map, and the Kaplan-Norton strategy management system. They are the world’s leading authorities on strategy measurement and management respectively. Kaplan is Baker Foundation Professor at Harvard Business School, and the chairman of professional practice at Palladium. Norton is a founder and director of Palladium.
The Balanced Scorecard, first introduced as a measurement framework to capture financial and non-financial measures of organizational performance, subsequently evolved into a key tool of the Kaplan-Norton strategy management system, a comprehensive, six-stage, closed-loop management system that links strategy to operations. It is the world’s most widely adopted system for successful strategy execution.
"We developed software certification to ensure that the Balanced Scorecard name maintains its meaning and that any investment made in associated software retains its value," said Norton. "The Kaplan-Norton strategy management system, which includes the Balanced Scorecard and underlies certification, helps organizations clarify strategy, drive performance, and optimize data to make better decisions."
